The week so far

This week in Mexico

4 developments shaping business decisions in Mexico this week.

Ranked by business relevance and urgency. Coverage through October 10.

  1. Simon strengthens as a Category 4 hurricane off Mexico’s Pacific coast

At 6 a.m. Mexico City time on October 10, the U.S. National Hurricane Center estimated Simon's sustained winds at 240 km/h, or Category 4. A hurricane warning covers Punta San Telmo to El Roblito and the Islas Marías.

    Context

Category 4 rates wind strength. NHC forecasts life-threatening floods and landslides through Sunday in parts of Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit. It expects Simon near or inland of the coast early Sunday, but the track is uncertain and an offshore path could prolong its hurricane strength.

    Why it matters

Corporación Multimodal, one cargo operator in Manzanillo, announced a suspension of all its operations from midnight on October 10 and a halt to new container appointments. Its customers could face interrupted container pickups and deliveries. The notice gives no reopening time.

  2. CFE puts power lines and electricity sales under separate divisions

A reorganization of CFE, Mexico’s state power company, takes effect October 10 after publication in the Official Gazette the previous day. A new grid division oversees transmission and distribution, the networks of wires that carry power to users.

    Context

The board approved the changes on September 28. The grid division will oversee expansion, maintenance and restoring power after disasters. A separate commercial division will handle electricity supply and sales, including CFE’s business in the wholesale power market.

    Why it matters

The change separates decisions about selling electricity from responsibility for delivering it through the network. The new grid division is responsible for network investment and repairs. The reorganization alone does not show that capacity or service has improved.

  3. Volvo ships first test trucks from Nuevo León to Canada

Volvo’s new Nuevo León factory is testing its production lines and has not begun regular production. Volvo Group México president Rafael Kisel described the early manufacturing stage in an interview published by Expansión on October 9.

    Context

Volvo’s 2024 plan called for the Monterrey plant to make and paint truck cabs and assemble Volvo and Mack trucks. It would complement US factories, serving the US and Canada and supplying Mack trucks to Mexico and Latin America. Operations were expected to begin in 2026.

    Why it matters

The first shipments show that the plant can build and export trucks. The larger change would come with regular output: a Mexican factory adding to Volvo and Mack’s existing US production. The company has not disclosed that output’s scale or the workforce needed at full capacity.

  4. Mexico increases gasoline tax relief for October 10 to 16

The government is discounting the federal per-litre fuel tax known as IEPS by 64.31% for regular gasoline and 71.29% for Premium this week. Diesel keeps full relief from that specific tax charge, plus a larger additional subsidy.

    Context

The new rates were published October 9 and replace those for October 3 to 9. The weekly discount reduces how much of the federal per-litre fuel tax is collected. Both gasoline discounts have risen, with the bigger increase for Premium.

    Why it matters

The federal fuel-tax charge falls more for Premium than for regular gasoline. That reduces one part of fuel costs, but the notice does not set station prices or guarantee an equivalent reduction at the pump.
