The daily brief

Today in Mexico

The stories in this edition, with context and an explanation of why they matter.

  1. Mexico’s industrial output rose 0.6% in August

Statistics agency INEGI reported on October 12 that industrial output grew 0.6% from July and 3.6% from August 2025, after adjusting for seasonal patterns and price changes. Manufacturing and utilities each rose 1.2% monthly, while mining fell 1.6% and construction was unchanged.

    Context

The measure covers factories, construction, mining, and utilities such as electricity and water. Removing price changes means it tracks production, not higher selling prices. Seasonal adjustment makes adjacent months more comparable by accounting for recurring patterns in the year.

    Why it matters

August marked the third consecutive monthly rise, extending the pickup seen in June and July. The report covers only the industrial part of the economy. Services such as retail, tourism and finance are measured separately, so this is not an economy-wide growth figure.

  2. Manzanillo reopens as Puerto Vallarta prepares to follow

Airport operator GAP confirmed Manzanillo reopened October 12 and plans Puerto Vallarta passenger flights from October 13. At 9 p.m. Mexico City time October 12, the National Hurricane Center reported Simon’s sustained winds at 155 km/h.

    Context

Hurricane conditions remain expected in Islas Marías and possible north of Escuinapa to Bahía Tempehuaya. From Cabo Corrientes to Escuinapa, a tropical-storm watch has replaced the hurricane watch. Heavy rain threatens west-central coastal Mexico, especially Sinaloa through Thursday, with deadly flood and landslide risks.

    Why it matters

Puerto Vallarta has allowed only official aircraft since 2:30 p.m. local time on October 12. Commercial flights are planned from Tuesday, October 13, but their return depends on each airline’s schedule. GAP asks passengers to check their flight’s status and time directly with the airline before going to the airport.

  3. Mexico’s proposed 2027 revenue package heads to committee before planned floor vote

Morena’s lower-house leader Ricardo Monreal aims for an October 13 to 15 vote if committee work finishes. Deputies have until October 20 to approve the 2027 revenue proposal, which forecasts MXN 6.26 trillion in taxes.

    Context

Separate income-tax changes target companies resident in Mexico with taxable profits and taxable revenue above MXN 50 million. The proposed cap generally covers firms with at least five fiscal years of tax registration, with sector and tax benefit exceptions.

    Why it matters

Past losses can reduce the profit a company pays tax on. The proposal would limit that offset to half of annual taxable profit, potentially raising near-term payments, while allowing losses blocked by the cap to be used for 20 years instead of 10.
