Today in Mexico

The stories in this edition, with context and an explanation of why they matter.

  1. Pemex’s crude export revenue falls despite higher prices

El Economista reports third-quarter crude exports fell 33% year-on-year to 371,272 barrels daily. Export receipts declined 8.4% year-on-year to US$2,916 million.

    Context

Pemex is directing more crude toward domestic refining. Meanwhile, its bill for imported petroleum products and liquefied gas rose 43% year-on-year to US$6,259 million.

    Why it matters

Export volume alone is a poor measure of energy self-sufficiency. Import costs also matter for cash flow.

  2. Mexico and Canada goods trade expands in both directions

El Economista cites Statistics Canada: bilateral goods trade increased 16.7% year-on-year from January to August.

    Context

Mexican exports to Canada rose 15.7%. Canadian exports to Mexico increased 18.4%. These figures measure trade values.

    Why it matters

Growth in both directions points to commercial opportunity. It does not establish that the bilateral action plan caused the increase.
